Julian Rocks, Byron Bay

first light at julian rocks - limited edition prints available

AT 6:30 AM WE LEFT BRUNSWICK HEADS IN A SMALL BOAT, PAUSING AT THE BREAKWATER, TO WAIT FOR THE RIGHT MOMENT TO HEAD OUT OVER THE BREAKERS. AS SOON AS OUR BOAT HIT THE BACK OF THE FIRST WAVE AND SPED DOWN ITS INKY GLASS SURFACE, I WAS HOME. THE OCEAN SPREAD OUT, SO MUCH NEARER. WAVES BARRELLED TOWARDS THE SHORE BEHIND US AS LIGHT ROSE IN THE SKY.

THERE IS NOTHING ELSE QUITE LIKE THE FEELING OF HEADING OUT ON THE WATER: FEAR, ANTICIPATION, JOY AND GRATITUDE CREATE A SPACE WHERE I FEEL I CAN FINALLY REST AND LET LIFE UNFOLD. I AIM TO BRING THIS EXPERIENCE INTO MY LIFE MORE OFTEN. THESE OCEAN ADVENTURES ARE TEACHING ME TO BE MY BEST SELF IN MY GROUNDED WORLD, MY EARTHED REALITY, NO MATTER WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.

I SOAKED IN EVERY OUNCE OF EARLY MORNING LIGHT, WARM AIR AND SEA SPREAD VIEW. I RELISHED THE RISE OF ANTICIPATION AND BUOYANT ENERGY WITHIN MY BEING. MY HEART ROSE AND FELL WITH EACH LONG, LOW SURGE THAT STRETCHED OUT FROM SHORE TO MEET US AS WE TRAVELED.

AS THE ROCKS CAME INTO SHARP FOCUS, OUR MOTOR SLOWED AND FINALLY STOPPED. THE STARTLING BLUE WATER OF THE ROCKS SPREAD AROUND US AND BELOW, THE CURLING SHADOWS OF LEOPARD SHARKS.

WE SWAM IN THE BLUE WATERS FIGHTING CURRENTS PULLING IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS FROM EITHER END OF THE ROCKS. A SWEET SPOT OF SOMEWHAT CALM WATER LAY IN THE MIDDLE. FISH SCHOOLED AND RESTED THERE IN THE WHITE CHURNED UP WATERS WHERE WATER MET ROCK. MORE FISH THAN I COULD HAVE IMAGINED SWAM AROUND US, CURIOUS, AT EASE. THE SHARKS LAY ON THE BOTTOM OR SWAM JUST OUT OF VIEW, ONLY THE HINT OF THEIR SHAPE SHOWING IN THE DARKER BLUE. TURTLES SWAM WITH US, MUCH MORE ADEPT AT DIVING THAN I, THEIR GAIT BOTH CLUMSY AND GRACEFUL.

WHAT A WORLD! I WAS PRIVILEGED TO SWIM WITH BOTH FRIENDS AND MARINE LIFE IN THESE WARM WATERS, TO BE ABLE TO VISIT SUCH A WONDERLAND OF COLOR AND LIFE. I LEFT WITH MY HEART HAPPY AND LIGHT AFTER A MUCH NEEDED ANOINTING IN THE BLUE HOLY WATERS OF JULIAN ROCKS.
