Field Notes — there are four kinds of field notes in the anthropological tradition: jottings, a diary, a log, and field notes proper. While I’m not an anthropologist, I make a lot of these notes but haven’t typically shared them, or not for a long time, and not here on this website. I would like to begin doing this now.
These notes will be short and informal, a mix of diary, log and jottings. They might be accompanied by a photograph or not. They’ll be about some aspect of the wider field of my life and ecology — what I’m thinking about, reading, struggling with, making, seeing, feeling, growing, learning. My habitat, as a friend used to say. Sometimes, I’ll share field notes proper—more fleshed out ideas in longform.
The internet is absurd. Nevertheless, a desire to share my thoughts and experiences in this space continues. I remember math teachers from every school grade telling us to show our work. These notes moving forward are my workings, at least the ones that will make their way into the online archive.
